uPlayme gets big money for music app

Venture news for the day is that uPlayMe has raised big money for it’s music app. While we had know about that for a while, we just never wrote explicitly about it. Anyway, the funding seems to have come from Warner Music Group, Village Ventures and individual investors. The BIG reason for getting funded is that the startup’s founder and chairman Dan Pelson is a senior vice president at Warner Music Group. That will for sure make the deal cutting way easier for the startup.

I had written about uPlayme around couple of months back when it did a new release of it’s Facebook app. Currently they have 5,816 users to talk about, as compared to 6.5 million for uPlayme. That’s a lot of catching up to do. The lower number might be attributed to uPlayme’s requirement to download it’s desktop/mac app to deliver the best features in store. According to the comments left by uPlayme team member Keith Gould in my last post, they will be sticking to the desktop strategy in the longer term to deliver better social features. Hope that strategy works out since I have to think really hard for the last successful desktop that I came across(besides Skype).
