Skype struggles to stay up

By Vivek | August 16th, 2007 at 06:18 am ET

It seems to be a good as well as a bad news day for Skype today. Usually the IM service has around 800K people online at any given time and it works just fine. But today I have been getting connected to Skype only intermittently and even then all my online contacts are not showing up as online. And connected disconnected pattern continues. However in the connected periods, bottom right corner reveals the reason - “1,475,277 people online”.

Anyone else facing connectivity issues?

At least it’s not just me! I was having all sorts of problems getting a service about 3 hrs ago.

Finally got voip working but it kept going grey and ‘connecting’ even dropping the call at one point.

There is official news on the Skype website - http://heartbeat.skype.com/2007/08/problems_with_skype_login.html

It is unforgiveable that Skype has suffered such a problem - they must have broken every rule of software upgrades or software architecture to have this happen - by the way this is after a major software upgrade.

The user figures for me have rolled up from 1 million in the 1.0 days to now near 8 million or so. When I got the client logged in for a short time today they had only 5000 online.
