Fringsters ICQ NOW!

By Vivek | August 7th, 2007 at 10:43 am ET

Fringsters are always on the move. Today the Israel based mobile startup added support for ICQ on it’s mobile app. Users can get in touch with their buddies anytime anywhere where they have 3G, GPRS, EDGE or Wi-Fi coverage. Once you get the app installed, all your ICQ buddies will show up in your fring contact list together with your Skype, MSN Messenger, Google Talk and regular phonebook contacts.

EQO is another startup that enables ICQ chat on mobile phones. Funny part is that EQO logs you out if you don’t use the app once each hour. Can you believe that?

Given that fring’s VOiP support for Google talk is now broken and that Skype’s voice has never worked, one would think they would be more focused on fixing current problems than introducing new ones. If anyone from fring would like more info, please leave your name and how to be reached on my blog. Many thanks!

    Hello Sir,

Thank you for mentioning us in your Mobile ICQ post. We disconnect EQO Mobile after one hour of inactivity to help forgetful users avoid unnecessary data charges. Can you believe that? Maybe we need a setting for the connection timeout, what do you think?

    Cheers,

    Chris,

Someone might be really clueless to use EQO on per megabit plan. Anyway, in my opinion single most limiting factor on uptake of mobile apps is that users need to download and install these apps. On the top of it if you expect users to re-install the app for new configuration updates kick in, you are asking for way too much.

Just as a FYI, i use Google Talk on my Blackberry, which never logs me out. Till date they have not released any feature update that required reinstall and has worked perfectly out of the box.

    Hello Vivek,

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that downloading new app versions to receive updates is annoying and we are doing our very best to minimize future updates. As for the Blackberry version of EQO Mobile, I think we are going to relax the connection timeout seeing as most Blackberry users have large, if not unlimited, data plans.

    Cheers,
