MindTouch Hayes - Wikis become services enabled

Yesterday I got a chance to look at the new release of the wiki software MindTouch team has been working on for the past months. While I had expected the usual addition of widgets into the wiki platform, I was in for a surprise. The new build, which is branded as MindTouch Hayes, comes with a powerful new service-oriented extension model. Instead of being mere content consumers, MindTouch customers can now have access to composite applications by federating applications or data across without bothering about the OS, code language,…
From the user standpoint the end result still looks more or less like adding external content via widgets. But it is the powerful new administration back-end that sets MindTouch apart from it’s competitors. In the new build, access to new services is controlled by the administrator. Consider the case of Flickr slideshow being called inside the wiki. Before this can happen, an administrator has to register Flickr with the wiki by providing an URL to the service. The administrator can then decide which features to allow, say ‘slideshow’ and ‘badge’. Only after that a user can embed a Flickr slideshow into the wiki.
Besides Flickr, MindTouch will also be delivering more webservices to start with. One of the better ones I noticed was MYSql service that let’s users query their databases from right inside the wiki. Not many widget/gadget companies understand that this is one of the most basic but important services needed in the enterprise space.
And not to forget another important feature release - The new version also introduces a complete application programming interface (API) making it possible for developers to add wiki capabilities to their existing applications.
Pricing - Well, MindTouch is still working on that. They will be offering a new developer version to enable MindTouch partners deploy the app at their client sites. One thing is for sure though- MindTouch device based offering would be phased out in the future. More details on the rest should be out soon.
As for the existing MindTouch deployments, the list includes Microsoft, Intel, Fujitsu Consulting, SEI, British Petroleum, Quark Software, St. Bernard Software, Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University and CitiGroup, among others.

[…] Recent Trackbacks: Library clips :: Friendstreams :: July :: 2007: 8hands is a desktop app, so I didn’t try it out, but it seems to be both a lifestream and a way to connect to your friends from various social networks, if they are also 8apps users you can IM chat. I think the idea is more about connection, as you can check who has commented or left a message from all your online profiles from the one spot…now that’s handy. Minggl seems similar to 8apps.
