Widsets gets bit useful with email widget

By Vivek | June 12th, 2007 at 12:15 pm ET

I am not a big fan of Widsets. As for the reasons behind that you can read by previous post on the mobile startup from Nokia. However the team is making progress and today officially announced launch of 3 new widgets out of which at least 2 can prove to be useful to lot of mobile users.

First comes the email widget that can quickly get you notifications of any new email you receive. Best part is that it can check email for  several different email account. Currently supported email apps and protocols include - Gmail, IMAP and POP3. For complete text emails without Widsets, you can always use Flurry.

Second new widget is - Private chatting. It basically ”enables you to create online chat rooms for you and your buddies. You can even snap a picture with your mobile and post it to the chat.” I don’t think it is designed to be as native app as Google Talk on BB(yeah my benchmark for chat on mobile). The widget tends towards chat rooms which might be far fetched idea on mobile phone since the whole concept of mobile chatting is still in infancy.

As for the Twittery and Jaiki fans there is now a Jaiku widget too.

Am i going to use Widsets now? Noo. Last thing i want to do everyday is bring up another app on my mobile phone that takes few seconds just to load.

Others in the widgets@mobile race:
WebWag goes mobile
Netvibes gets mobile

Mobio mobile widgets out next week ZenZui - More widgets for your mobile

    Hi,
I’m glad to see that our progress has been recognized! Maybe when WidSets is out of Beta, you could even start consider using it! :-)
As for the startup time, that’s unfortunately nothing we can affect, if varies a lot from phone to phone, as well as the capability to run WidSets in the background continuosly.
Anyway, keep up the great work!
    Cheers!

[…] Besides the above said upcoming launch, Mobio has also released a new widget designed to let users search for, organize and read their favorite blogs and news sites through a streamlined, customizable mobile interface called My RSS. Users simply click on the headline to see a brief description or they can view the story in its entirety, complete with images right on their handsets. On the whole, Mobio seems to be giving some heat to Widsets from Nokia. […]

[…] Looking at the bigger picture of what all Mobio offers, it does seem to be leading the mobile widgets pack. Especially if you look at the transactional apps from Mobio, like the one for OpenTable where you can make a booking right from the mobile app, that do 2 way data interaction instead of being just a API call or RSS feed display app. Still, Mobio has to watchout for Boston based uLocate that is betting heavily on GPS enabled mobile apps and wireless carrier partnerships, and also Nokia backed Widsets that has the big brand and device list to ride on.
