Yeigo(es) for V2.0; More mVoIP & mIM for everyone

By Vivek | June 4th, 2007 at 11:08 am ET

Yeigo is the second South African startup we are talking about on the same day. That doesn’t happen that very often. Just shows that some enterprising tech teams are churning out smart code out there far away. Coming to real deal, Cape Town, South Africa based startup Yeigo has launched Version 2 of it’s mobile VoIP and chat application that enables you to call for free any Yeigo user and chat with your IM buddies. Chat is supported for most of the major IM networks including GoogleTalk, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, AIM and Jabber. From the free calling standpoint you need 3G/EDGE(?) or Wi-Fi connection to make calls. Calls to non-Yeigo users result in the typical per minute fees.

As for the supported phones majority of them include the Symbian and Windows Mobile phones. Since I haven’t tried the app, can’t really saw how deep is the device integration and quality of calls made via the service.

Ah, the talk was about new version. So among other things, the new release delivers efficient data usage so you pay less for your Internet connection. Code changes now ensure your talk time are longer since the new version will effectively send less data than its predecessor and thus use less of your battery’s power.

Should we start talking about competition? Naa. Just check our cheat-sheet for bunch of other startups operating in this space besides the carriers themselves.
