It’s 21 hours and Google Analytics is still not updating

By Vivek | May 23rd, 2007 at 12:28 pm ET

Update: The service is back up and refreshing data after almost 24 hours of downtime. It seems Google is really starting interpret the meaning of Free for us.

It’s amazing how things are shaping up at the always on super server-grid company that supposedly has over 400K servers at it’s disposal at the last count sometime last year. Google Analytics has not updated stats for over 21 hours now. There are few more people noticing the same issue. To add to it the team behind it doesn’t seem to care much about the people using the service. If they would have, something should have been posted on their blog. I mean, everytime they have a new feature, all of their blogs try to link to it. But when there is a downtime……..

It was just last week I had started looking for other options to manage my email and docs ’cause a hosted but free service like Google Apps cannot be trusted(privacy+outage). Since I don’t really need the paid plan from Google Apps, I am not covered by Google’s 99.9% uptime SLA. Just imagine being hit by a similar outage on the Google Apps side. And if you out there looking for help, you would pretty soon hit the already infamous automated replies from Google for customer issues. I think in times like these when you need urgent help, Google is not really the right place to be in.

As compared to that, today I was having performance issues with one of the widgets hosted on my site. A quick chat with the team resolved the issue in matter of minutes.

You may want to check your data again.
We had the same problems on our site and the data just updated.

There are a couple of threads in the Troubleshooting are of the Google Group for Analytics Help discussing this problem.

Please take a look. I’ve posted further comments there as well.

[…] Google Analytics is having the time it’s life - down for 3+ days. Frankly I stopped checking too frequently on Google Analytics since their last outage which I had reported couple of months back. But this time around things are getting much worse. According to people who have been tracking and reporting on this outage, the service stopped delivering data since Saturday and today it is gradually limping back to normal. Couple of blog posts on the Google Analytics blog acknowledged the issue, but only on the day 3 of the outage. […]

[…] Google Schmoogle-Clients Blame Us. Even though Google Analytics is an amazing free toy concocted by geniuses, in the real world when I recommend a vendor to a client as capable, reliable, accountable, and effective I put our company’s reputation on the line. We’re held especially accountable for analytics recommendations we make. It doesn’t matter if the services outage is Google’s fault-our clients blame us for making the recommendation. This is the second round of Google Analytics outages since May.  There was data loss this time around, in spite of Google’s spin. Client analytics accounts, where we also use ClickTracks, were low for the outage-hours. […]
