4thMedia mobile media streaming – Inside look

By Vivek Puri

Earlier I got time to get updates and play with 4thMedia’s media-to-mobile streaming service about which I had written yesterday. The startup is currently operating in pre-beta mode with around 1000 beta testers.

4thMedia’s user experience revolves around users being able create their own personalized media lists. In the startup’s terminology, every media stream is a clip. Think of WSJ Tech News stream as a clip. Clip goes into Blend, which in another name for playlist. From there on you add clips to Blends and Blends to your phone playlist. End result – your playlists get streamed to your mobile phone any time you want. As for sharing you can add Blends from other users to your list and so can others. Currently 4thMedia is streaming audio while video part comes sometime later.

As for supported phones the list includes HTC 8125/3125, Motorola KRZR/Q/RAZR V3m, and host of Nokia phones. Blackberry gets booted as usual.

I think we had enough of services trying to stream you PC files to your mobile. Zannel and 4thMedia are making moves that interest me more on the mobile space. Since keys and screen on mobile phones are too tiny to work with, get done with the personalization on web and watch it on your mobile.

Juice Wireless’s core product is JuiceCaster that supposedly makes it easier for users to upload videos and images right from their mobile phones onto JuiceCaster Mediabox, in other words a widget based service, that you can embed on your social network profile. Juice has done number of partnership in the past year with the likes of AOL, Gillette, and quite a few more, although we are not really sure how much Juice finally make out of them. [...]
