Widget war brewing up

By Vivek | February 9th, 2007 at 05:20 pm ET

Webwag is working on allowing users to add external widgets to their homepage account. This includes widgets from other similar service provides like Google IG and Netvibes. This new functionality was discovered by a new user who later posted it on Newsvine, which was than picked up by the Webwag team itself. The new feature is more in testing phase right now and Webwag will be officially announcing the feature release at a later stage. A good scenario that comes into play is that developers need to make their widgets compatible with Clearspring which than works with Google IG, Netvibes,… and they are automatically good to go with Webwag in case partnership is not in place.

Looking back at all the activity in the last 6 months, home page services and widget enablers space is having one heck of time. The speed at which the landscape is changing, it is getting difficult to tell who does what. Users are already having a tough time defining the use for Musestorm, Clearspring, and Widgetbox, and now we have the cross platform encroachment starting between the home page services itself. Not that this was not expected, but the gap between the people who understand the new rapidly changing world and those who are still stuck with Web10 is ever widening. Anyway, it would be interesting to see what Google and Netvibes have to say about this.
