MySpace now blocks Revver

By Vivek Puri

Revver has posted on it’s site blog that Revver embed codes are coming up with nothing on MySpace. Quick check showed that MySpace is either adding extra characters to the code or stripping out the code altogether so that the video doesn’t come up. However Youtube videos continue to work perfectly. Nice move from MySpace – strangle them one-by-one.

Last week MySpace had given shocker to all video and photo sharing sites when none of the embed codes worked for few hours. Let’s see how long Revver experiment runs.

While this is really awful and distressing – Facebook and Beebo sure aint letting most widgets come in and play either. MySpace has been almost unusually open. Oh for the love of widgets!

Marshall, The issue is that Bebo, Twango, Facebook publicly say they don’t allow external widgets except in select cases. So they are good in their stance. However MySpace always allowed widgets. Now with their plans to get in revenue-game mode, I don’t think this is wrong. But if they let the widget companies and the users know what changes are coming up, i think it will be a better idea. After all it is a big investment for number of companies in terms of $$s and man hours. Again we should definitely see number of these MySpace addons looking to monetize their products. Charge $1 or $2 per month but don’t give away your work for free. When suddenly things like this hit, situation can get pretty desperate.

Micki here from Revver. Thanks for sharing the news here, Vivek. I agree that what makes this so hard to deal with is the fact that when MySpace blocks a particular widget, there is little or no warning to their users or to the widget-makers. It’s much easier on a community for a site to open up its policies (as we are seeing with Facebook) than it is to become more closed. It’s also important to remember that Revver has one of the most creator-friendly member agreements of all the UGC sites. Check out this comparison done by the folks over at OurMedia: http://tools.ourmedia.org/index.php?title=TOS_comparison. We hope that MySpace users will let them know that they want MySpace to remain open and that they shouldn’t be forced into sharing videos from sites that don’t reward the artists.
