Social sharing site eSnips introduced a new mashup concept today at CES – eSnips Microportals. eSnips Microportals provide a comprehensive, ever-changing, centralized view into all aspects of a community regardless of size or type. eSnips users can aggregate the latest, most popular and favorite content for their areas of interest at one single location. Any Microportal can be formed around a group of people who use the same tags (categories) to describe the content they publish. eSnips will provide controls to the Microportal owners to monitor and control the content going in. Users will also be able to customize and edit the appearance and background of their portal. After the official integration of the feature users themselves will be able to create Microportals, which currently have to be requested for.
Microportals from eSnips feel more or less like the mashups Yahoo(news+del.icio.us+flickr like Yahoo Wii Portal) has been coming up lately. Only difference is that in case of eSnips the portals are community generated, which I think is the right strategy since community knows the content best and be more creative than a small team.
Release of Microportals and related features with a tight focus on the target community, which in case of eSnips is adults, had resulted in the sharp growth of eSnips. eSnips claims to currently have 5 million monthly unique monthly visits and over 1.2 million registered users.

[...] At Mashable, I read about eSnips, a “YouTube for everything” that lets you share various kinds of files (video, audio, text, photos..). The site has been around for eight months and reportedly has over a million users. What’s new is that it’s added community sites, or “MicroPortals” for a number of subjects, some of them fairly narrow: Karaoke, DJs, Spiritual, Poetry, Paranormal… When uploading files to eSnips, you tag your material, and if you tag it with a MicroPortal tag it ends up on that page. Users who have used the MicroPortal’s tag are also displayed. According to StartupSquad, new MicroPortals can be started for any tag that a number of people have used – right now by request, but users will be able to do this themselves. eSnips will provide controls to the Microportal owners to monitor and control the content going in. Users will also be able to customize and edit the appearance and background of their portal. [...]

[...] eSnips the versatile social sharing site has entered the widget world with style by launching innovative music widgets. This feature introduction comes after the launch of eSnips Microportals in January. Couple of Microportals which have really taken off include the DJ and Karaoke communities. eSnips was quick to realize the need of users to share and take the uploaded content beyond these communities. Hence the launch of music players disguised as widgets that enable users to host, share, and promote the uploaded music. Users get option to create widget with only a few clicks from a variety of cool, genre-specific player and playlist styles without leaving the site. [...]
