Fring to work on WiFi soon

By Vivek Puri

Fring, whose 3G mobile application enables users to make free calls using their wireless data network(mVoIP), will soon be able to make calls over their WiFi networks. I had long expected Fring to offer the WiFi compatibility and even last week written about Fring(on data only network) in comparison to Skype on mobile. WiFi connectivity mode on Fring will come with an automatic handover configuration so that you can use hotspots and your home WiFi networks to make calls quickly and easily. Still it will be interesting to play around with the wireless-Data-WiFi switching of networks.

Also as part of its next release, Fring is also extending the support for Wider handset compatibility, adding Nokia N80, E61, N73, E60, N91, N92 and N93 handsets to the existing Fring-friendly phones (Nokia 6630, 6680, 6681, 6682, N70, N72, N90).

Going back to the comparison chart, Fring after the launch of new release will work over both data and WiFi networks on a wide range of Nokia phones, GizmoProject works over WiFi on Nokia 770 and N80i, Truphone works over WiFi network on E60, E61, E71, and N80ie, iSkoot works over wireless network on Nokia N73 and the Sony Ericsson W950, and Skype is expected to work over WiFi on limited set of Nokia phones. Clearly Fring has it lead in terms of networks it can work and the number of supported handsets.

You can check my earlier post on Fring that I had written few months back.

[...] (-)Development community: Nokia has a good market share of the mobile apps that are launched and strong development community to power innovative application development. Just look at some of the most promising technologies in making from startups like Truphone, Fring, iSkoot, Skype, Gizmo, and Imity, all of whom first support the Symbian phones. After Nokia, rest of the market share is taken up by Moto, Sony, Treo/Microsoft Mobile and few more European mobile companies. When Apple opens up its platform(if it plans) in June, it will be looking to grab share from either of these development communities which like any other development platform take its own sweet amount of time.
