Berggi will be officially unveiling it’s mail and message delivery service on mobile on the coming Thanksgiving Thursday. The service, which works in a similar manner to Blackberry email delivery service, will provide users with email, instant messaging and SMS capabilities for a fixed low price of $9.99/month. The startup, founded in 2003 by Jorge Mata, had till date raised $3 million in funding from Adara Venture Partners. Jorge had previously sold his text message based marketing service provider, MyAlert.com, to Italy’s Buongiorno in 2001.
Berggi is targeting the non Blackberry, Treo, and Pocket PC users who always wanted a cheap and reliable messaging platform. Using Berggi mobile phone users can easily send and receive emails on their mobiles from their Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail accounts. Just as in BlackBerry, users need to provide the login and password for their email account in order to start receiving messages on their mobile phones. Users can also connect to their POP3 or SMTP accounts to access their enterprise emails. Berggi delivers any text in the body of an email, but does not provide access to attachments as in Blackberry and smartphones.
Besides emailing, users can chat from their mobile phone with their buddies located on any of the most popular instant messaging networks including Google Talk, Yahoo, msn, aol, ICQ, and Jabber. Berggi users can also send unlimited text messages from their mobile phones, a service similar to the one provided by Hotxt for UK based mobile users.
If you had bought your mobile phone within the last 3 years, you should be able to use Berggi on your mobile. As mentioned above, PDA and smartphones are not supported by Berggi since they already have in-built advanced messaging software. Mobile phone users from major U.S. mobile carriers, except for Verizon and Nextel, will be able to download and use the application on their phones. Berggi plans to offer it service on a monthly basis and users can cancel their plan anytime without penalty.
If Berggi delivers as promised, it will truly revolutionize the mobile messaging market which has not seen mass market adoption ’cause of the high prices of data plans. As compared to Blackberry data plan that cost $45, I will be much happier paying $9.99 to Berggi for these unlimited messaging features.
I haven’t tried the service personally, but will be on lookout for reviews. Will try providing updates after the launch on Thursday.
