Live search now on Sprint

By Vivek Puri

Microsoft today entered into an alliance with Sprint that enables Sprint customers to use Windows Live Search on their mobile phones. Sprint customers will be able to search for location-based content like stores and restaurants and retrieve maps, and driving directions. Microsoft will also look to deliver highly relevant and targeted local advertising using the new platform. The service is immediately available at no additional cost to Sprint PCS Vision and Sprint Power Vision subscribers.

Having the Windows Live search application pre-installed on Sprint phones does give Microsoft an advantage. But the user acceptance will be highly dependent on the results provided by Windows Live search. Microsoft has been doing similar deals before  including the ‘Orange Messenger by Windows Live’ announced last month.

I am not sure if Google has similar plans to partner with mobile service providers especially when they are looking to offer ‘Free mobile phones’. Anyway Google already provides Google Maps for mobile with real-time traffic, driving directions, and integrated local search results.
