Sharpcast today launched a new service, code named “Hummingbird“, that enables users to sync documents, photos, music, and video files located across different devices including PCs, mobile phones, and web. This move from Sharpcast was long expected who had initially launched a service that syncs up photos located on various devices connected to Internet.
“It’s far too difficult for people to manage all the data and media they have dispersed across various devices, applications and services,” said Gibu Thomas, chief executive officer of Sharpcast. “Hummingbird solves this problem in an intuitive way that’s person-centric, not device-centric or browser-centric. It makes it irrelevant whether you are online or offline, and eliminates time-consuming web uploads and downloads and emailing files to yourself just to make sure you have access to them.”
Instead of continuously sending email and comparing versions of files, Hummingbird will offer an automatic one-stop solution for you to backup, share, access and sync all types of files. Using the real-time synchronization technology and rich desktop software from Sharpcast you will be able to manually manage and sync your files spread across your desktop, laptop, web-drive, and mobile.
Unlike the previous photo sync application from Sharpcast, users will have to pay for this service. Right now Sharpcast is launching only the Alpha preview, by invitation, of Hummingbird with official launch being planned for sometime in early 2007.
I think Hummingbird from Sharpcast is one of the most needed apps that will help simplify our digital live. Personally I am already lost in the sea of documents crated by the increasing number of apps and gadgets I use. Really looking forward to try out the new product.
Sharpcast located in Palo Alto, CA, and led by Gibu Thomas has till date received more than $13.5 million in its two rounds of funding. Sharpcast investors include Sigma Partners, Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ) and Selby Venture Partners.

[...] 4. Sharpcast Hummingbird(Consumer+Enterprise): Earlier at the start of 2006 Sharpcast had launched its amazing photo synchronization software that can sync all your photos located on any of your internet enabled devices. Later at the Web20 conference in November 2006, Sharpcast had announced the launch of their new product Hummingbird in early Q2 of 2007. Hummingbird solves one of the basic problems that each of us face every day – multitude of files created in different formats on different machines owned by the same user. With increasing amount of content getting created through mobile devices, it just adds to the existing issue of getting your content to sync together. Building and running an enterprise class sync server that offers PC-Mac-Web-Mobile real-time synchronization for general users is quite a challenge that not many companies have tried till today. [...]
