In my research around various search verticals and persistent search engines I stumbled across Zibb which is a vertical search engine powering business to business search. Zibb is part of UK based Reed Business, a premier provider of business information. Zibb, which was officially launched in June this year, indexes content from business to business websites as well as from the Reed Business portfolio. Zibb is looking to become the most comprehensive, accurate and fastest provider of b2b search. Zibb search provides results across 26 different business categories including Finance, Tax, Real Estate, IT, and Automotive.
For any search keyword Zibb comes back with news articles, products, suppliers, and articles about the keyword in blogs and websites. Currently Zibb is monetizing its search using sponsored results and CPC based advertising. In future Zibb will be providing Zibb on-Demand feature to enterprise customers based on a license fee.
Vertical search engines like Zibb don’t need to go out and index the complete web, which obviously Google is much better at. They need to really excel in their core skill area and provide a better results to users to stay in the game. In this case Zibb already has access to wealth of b2b business information from the Reed Business. Business content combined with a small but agile team of 15 people including taxonomist, and software developers can give big search engines a tough time while catching up. Some of the other vertical search engines include Retrevo(for consumer electronics) and Krugle(code search).
