Google launches Custom Search Engines

By Vivek Puri | October 23rd, 2006 at 11:22 pm ET

Another day, another big news from Google. Today as Google share crossed $480 mark, Google announced availability of new features at Google Coop that will allow web publishers, bloggers, and individual users to create custom searches on their sites.

“Custom search engines empower communities everywhere to organize their own information and make it searchable,” said Shashi Seth, product manager for Google Custom Search Engine.

To create Custom Search Engine just bring up the Google Coop url and get started. Google enables you to set filter for which sites you want to include in the customized engine index and which sites you want to exclude from the index. You can invite other users who will be given limited access to your search engine to add sites and apply existing refinement labels. To customize the look and feel of the search engine you can add your logo and modify the color scheme. You can take the code provided by Google and host a search box and search results on your own site for the custom search engine. You can also hookup your adsense account to the custom search to monetize your custom search engine.

Some other players in this space include Rollyo and Eurekster.
