Writely + Google Spreadsheet = Google Docs

By Vivek Puri | October 11th, 2006 at 12:00 am ET

Google today combined its 2 major Office applications - Google Spreadsheet and Writely, which are now available at docs.Google.com.  Writely.com and spreadsheet.Google.com now redirect to docs.Google.com. The new Google Docs UI is more in line with the other Google applications like Gmail or Google Reader.

Business is as usual if you want to create word documents, which could be previously be created at Writely. Before this merge, if you wanted to change your email address for Writely account, you had to email Writely support. This is not the case anymore. Account email address can now be changed from the usual settings tab for Google Account. I think previously Writely did not have any ‘Preview’ feature, which has now been added. Also Gmail style spell-checker has replaced the old Writely spell-checker which was a bit difficult to locate. Tagging of documents is much quicker as compared to what Writely had before. I had my own personal wish list for Writely at the bottom of this post but don’t know what all has been delivered in this version.

I have yet to figure out how to go about creating or uploading a new spreadsheet in this new release. Maybe the Google Docs team is working on it right now. Will fill in with more details soon.

Update: Link for creating  a new spreadsheet is now available. However i dont think any changes were made to Google Spreadsheet core code itself.
